Deputies testify in hearing for deputy-involved shooting in east Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.(KBAK/KBFX) — Kern County Sheriff’s deputies took the stand Friday in a preliminary hearing involving a deputy-involved shooting in east Bakersfield that happened on May 9, 2025. The case involves Said Martinez, who is accused of shooting a woman and subsequently shooting a deputy in the hand.

The incident occurred on Water Street after a woman called 9-1-1, reporting she had been shot. Upon arrival, deputies encountered the suspect, Martinez, outside a home armed with a hammer, machete, and gun. Deputies fired at Martinez, hitting him. He was then taken to the hospital and later arrested.

Both the deputy and the woman who were shot received treatment at a hospital.

Martinez faces seven felony charges, including attempted murder, kidnapping, and assault on a peace officer.
