Pedestrian dead after violent Baker Street crash

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Bakersfield police confirmed Monday that a pedestrian died after being struck by a vehicle on Sumner Street.It all started around 6 p.m. when police say a driver hit a pedestrian at the intersection of Baker and Sumner streets, then took off. The driver allegedly continued northbound on Baker Street at a high rate of speed, failed to stop for a red light at Niles Street, and slammed into another vehicle.

The involved cars burst into flames after the wreck on Niles Street.

The hit-and-run driver was taken to the hospital with significant injuries and is being guarded, police say. The other driver died at the scene.
