Man sentenced in Kern County’s first Prop 36 trial conviction

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The first person convicted by a Kern County jury under drug and theft charges that took effect after the passage of Proposition 36 was sentenced Friday.

Dennis Ghianuly, 33, was sentenced to six years in prison after being found guilty of possession of a hard drug with two or more priors and petty theft with two or more priors.

Previously, Ghianuly would have been cited and released. But his arrest took place shortly after the passage of Prop 36, which enhanced penalties for repeat offenders for certain shoplifting and drug offenses…
