Family of baby who died in hot car speaks, pleads for brother’s return to their custody

PORTERVILLE, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — The family of the boy who died after being left in a hot car in Bakersfield last month — while his mother reportedly underwent a cosmetic procedure — spoke out this week.

Eyewitness News’ sister station KMPH in Fresno, spoke with Katie Martinez, who’s grieving the death of her one-year-old grandson, Amillio Gutierrez.

Amillio was left in a hot car for over two hours on June 29 outside a medical spa in Bakersfield. There, authorities said his mother, Maya Hernandez, 20, of Visalia, was inside the medical spa for a lip-filler procedure.

Court documents show Hernandez left Amillio and her other son, Mateo, inside her vehicle with the air conditioner on. However, according to experts, the vehicle, which was a 2022 Toyota Corolla, shuts off after an hour of inactivity…
