Governor Newsom reverses parole for convicted murderer of 17-year-old Amanda Zubia

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — Governor Gavin Newsom has reversed the California Parole Board’s decision to release one of the people convicted of the brutal murder of 17-year-old Amanda Zubia. Gov. Newsom announced his decision to reverse the parole on July 16, 2025, three days before the 21st anniversary of Zubia’s murder.

In April 2025, the California Board of Parole Hearings (BPH) initially granted parole to Maricruz Galaviz, a convicted murderer who has served about 20 years in prison. Galaviz was found suitable for release after a hearing on April 17, 2025, where the board determined she no longer poses a current and unreasonable risk to public safety.

In the parole release review, Newsom said, “I have considered the evidence in the record that is relevant to whether Ms. Galaviz is currently dangerous. When considered as a whole, I find the evidence shows that she currently poses an unreasonable danger to society if released from prison. Therefore, I reverse the decision to parole Ms. Galaviz.”…
