BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A family whose mother was stabbed to death outside their home say the suspect has been threatening their lives for months. That begs the question: What’s the law on verbal assault and harassment that doesn’t lead to physical violence?Fifty-four-year-old Gabriela Rodriguez’s children said their neighbor, 50-year-old Derrick Williams, has been verbally harassing their family and other neighbors for a long period of time.
“As far as the police coming out there have been a few calls, they have been there a few times, more so it’s one of those things where if he’s inside his house there’s nothing that they can do,” said Juliana Rodriguez, Gabriela’s daughter.

On July 15, Gabriela was stabbed multiple times while grabbing her mail in the 5000 block of Ream Way in south Bakersfield. According to court documents, neighbor Williams was found with blood on him and a knife thrown in his backyard.
