Remains of World War II soldier from Kern County recovered, accounted for after over 80 years

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A United States Army Air Forces captain who was killed during a mission in World War II was accounted for in January and will return home to Kern County for his burial, according to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency.

Capt. Arthur M. Lingo, who was 24 at the time of his death, was from Fellows, a census-designated place in Kern County.

According to the agency, Lingo and his wingman were carrying out a bomber escort mission to Sorau, Germany, when they saw a lone enemy aircraft below them. The wingman reported he had to pull out of the dive due to his windshield fogging, but Lingo continued after the plane while piloting his P-51 Mustang fighter.
