Ray Mata Jr. sentenced to probation, jail time in gun, drug cases

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Ray Mata Jr., the father of 8-year-old Genesis Mata accused of torturing and killing her, has been sentenced for his previous cases related to illegal use of guns and drugs.

Kern County Superior Court Judge Colette M. Humphrey sentenced Mata to two years of probation with 70 days to be spent in Kern County jail for his gun case. Mata has credit for 56 days, according to Humphrey.

On July 18, Mata pleaded no contest to carrying a loaded firearm without registration and tampering with the serial number on a firearm, according to court records. A charge of carrying a concealed firearm was dismissed.

In a separate case, Mata pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor for possessing marijuana for sale and the felony charge of keeping a place to sell a controlled substance was dismissed. Both cases were filed against Mata in 2021…
