Kern County braces for monsoon shift after unusually cooler-than-average summer weather

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — We Go From “Nonsoon” To “Monsoon” This Weekend….

Much of the summer, so far, has been dominated by cooler-than-average and quieter-than-normal weather across south-central California. The Southwest US Monsoon, a typical summertime phenomenon, has been almost entirely absent from our region up until now. Instead of the typical afternoon bubbly clouds and towering thunderstorms, our local mountains and deserts have seen blue sky nearly the entire time. This has been because of a particularly persistent pattern that has featured an upper-level high-pressure system over the south-central states and trough after trough of low pressure swinging onto the West Coast from the North Pacific. The result has been dry southwesterly flow for us.
