Mission at Kern County expands to meet growing demand for meals and services

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — Currently serving approximately 700 meals a day from a 1,500 square-foot kitchen, The Mission at Kern County is taking significant steps to address overcrowding by expanding its facilities, hoping to better support Kern County’s unhoused neighbors.

On Wednesday, the shelter will break ground on a 13,000 sq. ft. Kitchen & Dining, Vocational and transitional Housing Project, as part of the “Lasting Solutions…building a Better Bakersfield” initiative.

The new facility will include a larger kitchen, a dining room capable of seating up to 180 individuals, and a vocational center with 13 computer workstations. These resources aim to assist individuals in creating resumes, learning tech skills, and applying for jobs and housing…
