6-year-old dies in suspected DUI crash on East Panama Ln; 20-year-old driver arrested

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A 6-year-old has died of their injuries after a suspected DUI crash Sunday morning along East Panama Lane. The crash injured a woman and an infant. A 20-year-old man was arrested in connection to the crash.

The Bakersfield Police Department said the collision happened Sept. 28 at around 7:41 a.m. in the 2600 block of East Panama Lane. Investigators said the driver of a black sedan — identified as Cesar Magana — rear ended an SUV at high speeds as they headed westbound, causing the SUV to rollover into a vineyard.

Three people in the SUV were hurt and hospitalized, police said. A 6-year-old suffered major injuries, and a woman and an infant suffered minor to moderate injuries. Police said Monday, the 6-year-old died of their injuries at Orange County Children’s Hospital.

According to police, Magana showed “objective symptoms of impairment” and was taken into custody. He was booked into the Lerdo Justice Facility on felony DUI charges. He is due in court on Tuesday.
