California City Fire Department may get interim fire chief

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The California City Council is set to consider an agreement with Kern County on Tuesday to fill the role of interim fire chief for the city’s fire department, according to the city council meeting agenda.

In 2024, Cal City got rid of the fire chief and police chief positions for budget savings, ultimately creating the director of public safety position to oversee both the fire and police departments, according to the agenda.

The public safety director was placed on paid administrative leave. Shannon Hayes, a Cal City police officer, has been acting as the public safety director since Aug. 6, according to city officials…
