Kern County’s weather models falter as Tule fog disrupts temperature predictions

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.(KBAK/KBFX) — It’s certainly been a challenging forecast over the past couple of weeks across Kern County. Computer forecast models have been notoriously mishandling the Tule fog/cloudiness and, as a result, South Valley temperatures. While they were continuously predicting afternoon highs from the upper 50s to the low 60s, the reality showed our area stayed in the low to mid 40s for more than a week. This is why human experience and effort can’t quite be replaced by automated computerized processes.

The Central Valley temperature inversion has been quite remarkable. As afternoon highs couldn’t get past the mid-40s in Bakersfield, the mountain tops were reaching the 60s!

Sunday’s temperatures look to be pleasant from the mountains to the Kern River Valley and across the desert, where 60s to 70s should continue. The South Valley is always the most difficult area to pin down as the temperature inversion and associated Tule fog and low clouds play such a pivotal role in the temperature outcomes in this area, with a range of possibilities spanning from the mid-40s to the mid-60s depending on how exactly everything plays out…
