Bakersfield police identify officers in shooting that left man dead in south Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — The Bakersfield Police Department has identified the officers involved in the shooting in south Bakersfield on January 2nd, as Officers Joel Heredia and Alejandro Mendez. The shooting left a 41-year-old man dead.

The Bakersfield Police Department said on Friday, January 2, 2026, at around 10:11 p.m., officers were called to the 3700 block of El Alisal Street, near Hughes Lane, to check the welfare of a resident who was involved in a peace disturbance and threatening family members.

When officers arrived at around 10:20 p.m., they contacted the man, who was not compliant. Police said the person was armed with a handgun, and an officer-involved shooting happened…
