Jury selection to begin in trial of Eduardo Gutierrez, accused of infant abuse death

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.(KBAK/KBFX) — Jury selection is set to begin next week in the trial of Eduardo Gutierrez, a Bakersfield man accused of abusing an infant, leading to the baby’s death in late 2024.

The 25-year-old was arrested in November 2024 after a 1-month-old boy was found unresponsive at a home in east Bakersfield.

On November 24, 2024, a one-month-old was found unresponsive at around 6:03 p.m. in the 1000 block of Washington Street by Kern County deputies. The infant was taken to Memorial Hospital and transferred to a children’s hospital in Madera, where they died on Dec. 2.

In December 2024, Gutierrez was under mandatory supervision due to a prior felony domestic conviction involving the child’s mother at the time of his arrest. Despite his age and previously having a clean criminal record—which had led to a lighter sentence for that crime—the judge chose to revoke his bail…
