GET receives $1.5M from Caltrans to build smart grid for electric vehicles

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Caltrans said it is awarding $1.5 million to the Golden Empire Transit District to fund a clean transportation project.

The $1.5 million is meant to be used to build an off-grid, behind the meter, 250-kilowatt “Smart Grid” system, according to Caltrans. This system will be powered by solar electricity stored into three large batteries during daylight hours and deployed through EV chargers while they fuel at night.

The grid will allow GET to charge its five new electric vehicles, officials said.

The grant is part of Caltrans’ recent $202 million investment into 143 clean transportation projects prioritizing public transit and electric vehicle options in communities most affected by pollution, according to Caltrans…
