BAKERSFIELD, Calif.(KBAK/KBFX) — The hearing for Maya Hernandez, convicted of child abuse after leaving her two sons in a hot car, resulting in the death of one, has been postponed to next week.
In December, a jury was deadlocked on a second-degree murder charge, leading to a mistrial on that charge and involuntary manslaughter.
On Tuesday, several people, including the paternal grandmother of the children, gathered outside the courthouse calling for a retrial.
“I want her retried. I want a new jury put in front of her and know that what she did was wrong. She can’t lie her way out of it every time – whether she did it intentionally or not, he’s gone,” said Katie Martinez, the paternal grandmother. “It’s not right.”
In response to what she would say to Maya, she said, “Why? What could have been so important that she could not have let her kids stay somewhere and had them in the car to cook like that? I just want to know why.”…
