‘I Can Only Imagine 2’ just a few beats slower than original

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — It was very hard to imagine how a sequel to “I Can Only Imagine” could be made. A bigger question is why – other than for the money – make “I Can Only Imagine 2” as the original 2018 film was an uplifting blend of the power of song, the need for faith and the redemption a father and son can find if they only are willing to look to a higher power for help.

Finding that same magic appeared to be as big a long shot as a top Christian band releasing another song as powerful as “I Can Only Imagine.” Enough people had faith music magic could strike again took the gamble on making the follow-up film. In general, it was a gamble worth taking.

As with most sequels, “I Can Only Imagine 2” is not as strong as the original. A big part of that comes from co-director and writer Brent McCorkle having to jump through writing hoops to use the same formula as the first film. His configuration of those elements is close enough to make the film work…
