‘We’re going to work diligently in the next 2 years’: California DOJ extends stipulated judgement with Kern County Sheriff’s Office

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — In December 2015, The Guardian published an article finding that Kern County led the nation in killings per capita by law enforcement.

From incidents of excessive force to policing malpractice, the nation watched as the reputation of law enforcement in the Golden Empire took a hit.

The California Department of Justice, led by then AG Kamala Harris, soon opened an investigation that would “objectively, impartially, and thoroughly examine whether the Kern County Sheriff’s Office or the Bakersfield Police Department engaged in a pattern or practice of excessive force or other civil rights violations.”…
