KHSD looking to build new high school, considering funding needs

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The Kern High School District is considering building a new high school as well as possible ways to fund the potential project that would cost hundreds of millions of dollars, according to the Board of Trustees meeting agenda for Tuesday.

KHSD’s current student capacity is 37,183, although it is serving 43,349 students in grades 9 through 12, according to the agenda. It operates 19 comprehensive high schools, five continuation high schools and several special education programs.

The district is projecting its high schools to reach a total enrollment of 44,477 in the 2030-2031 school year — a much bigger student population than the district is able to account for with its existing classrooms.

While KHSD spokesperson Violeta Trujillo said the district doesn’t have immediate plans for a new school, it posed the idea of building a new high school by 2032 to respond to the projected enrollment — on top of expanding and modernizing several campuses and classrooms — in its report on construction financing needs over the next decade…
