Bakersfield City Council to hold first public hearing on proposed sewer rate hike

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The Bakersfield City Council is set to hold the first of its two scheduled public hearings for the proposed sewer rate increase during its Wednesday meeting.

The fixed annual sewer rate in Bakersfield since July 1, 2025, has been $247.13. This is collected on the property tax bill for all residential, commercial and industrial customers.

The city is proposing increasing that to $475 per year for the 2026-2027 fiscal year. Then the city would raise fees by $100 each year until the rate reaches $875 annually.

The five-year rate increase would help fund the upgrade and expansion of Bakersfield’s Wastewater Treatment Plants 2 and 3, respectively, as well as plans for Plant 4, according to city officials…
