BALTIMORE — Work on the construction of the replacement for the Northeast Corridor’s Baltimore & Potomac Tunnel will soon pick up, Amtrak says, as the tunneling contractor for the project increases preparations for launching the first of two tunnel boring machines in 2028.
Work is also progressing on preparations for realignment of the NEC south of the new Frederick Douglass Tunnel, Amtrak says, including utility relocations and replacement of the Mulberry Street Bridge.
The project has undergone more than a year of evaluations by Amtrak and the Federal Railroad Administration, leading to design changes that Amtrak says “improve constructability and scheduling, and address cost pressures.” FRA Administrator David Fink says in a press release that his agency “worked with Amtrak to improve the design of the B&P Tunnel while maintaining the highest safety standards and delivering another transformative rail project on the Northeast Corridor.”…
