Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has taken over downtown Baltimore this weekend, as thousands of members converge on the Inner Harbor for the sorority’s 55th Eastern Regional Conference. Delta Sigma Theta members are in the city through Sunday, with major programming centered at the Baltimore Convention Center and the Hilton Baltimore Inner Harbor.
As WBFF reported Saturday morning, the sorority holds its Eastern Regional Conference this weekend, with FOX45 This Morning’s Cookie Colbert — also known locally as DJ Crimson Cookie — highlighting the gathering after joining the station’s morning team. The conference runs from Thursday, August 27, through Sunday, August 30, according to the Downtown Partnership of Baltimore, which lists the convention center and the Hilton as the event’s primary venues.
A National Theme, A Local Legacy
This year’s regional conference cycle across all seven of Delta Sigma Theta’s geographic regions operates under the national theme “One Delta, One Mission: Anchored in Legacy, Evolving with Intention,” per ireishprint. That framing carries particular weight in Baltimore, a city with deep ties to the sorority’s founding generation. Sorority co-founder Vashti Turley Murphy chartered Epsilon Sigma in 1922 as Maryland’s first Delta Sigma Theta chapter, a group later renamed the Baltimore Alumnae Chapter in 1956, according to the Baltimore Deltas’ official site.
The public opening meeting was set for Thursday at the Baltimore Convention Center, featuring a keynote from Rev. Frederick D. Haynes III, Ph.D., per a post from the Baltimore Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. on Facebook. The conference schedule also includes a program called Baltimore Honors, set for Sunday at the Hilton Baltimore Inner Harbor, celebrating National Chaplain Emerita Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie alongside local community leaders, according to a Facebook post from the Eastern Region of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
Honoring a Founder’s Granddaughter
The Baltimore Honors tribute carries added resonance because of who is being celebrated. Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie, who became the first female bishop in AME Church history in 2000 and pastored Payne Memorial AME Church in Baltimore, is the granddaughter and namesake of sorority co-founder Lula Vashti Turley Murphy, according to BlackPast.org. That lineage links the national sorority’s leadership directly back to the same Baltimore institution where its Maryland chapter began more than a century ago…
