Baltimore Waste Incinerator Is Condemned As Another Charts Its Future

After racking up dozens of pollution violations, the owner of a troubled South Baltimore medical waste incinerator must soon cease operations and pay a $600,000 penalty under a state legal settlement, Maryland officials announced on Oct. 1.

The announcement comes nearly three years after owner Curtis Bay Energy pled guilty to 40 counts of criminal charges related to improperly treating and unlawfully disposing of waste at its facility. The charges resulted in a $1 million fine paid to the Maryland Clean Water Fund.

In a press release, Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown said that the agreement “shuts down the incinerator for good,” while Serena McIlwain, head of the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE), described it as a “major win for a community overburdened by pollution.”…
