We Tried The Maryland Pizza and Cheesesteak That Earned Rave Reviews From Dave Portnoy

A few months back, Dave Portnoy, the founder of Barstool Sports and famous for his “One Bite” pizza reviews, visited Frank’s Pizza & Pasta at 6620 Belair Rd in Baltimore earlier this year to sample their offerings. After his visit, customers began lining up down the block before the restaurant opens, eager to savor the pizza and cheesesteak that Portnoy rated so highly. Today, we tried it.

Using his renowned 1-10 rating system, Dave Portnoy awarded Frank’s New York-style cheese pizza an impressive 8.3, while their cheesesteak received an even more remarkable 9.0. We sampled the pizza as well, opting for both pepperoni and cheese slices. We found it to be a lighter, possibly crispier version of Giuseppi’s, a favorite from Gaithersburg and Rockville. As for the cheesesteak, we both enjoyed it thoroughly; one of us rated it slightly higher than SOKO in Takoma Park– thanks to the delightful sesame seed roll– while the other, Mr. MoCo, placed it just below SOKO’s offering.

Established in 1985, Frank’s was recognized as Baltimore’s Best Pizza in both 2023 and 2024 by Baltimore Magazine and The Baltimore Sun. The 8.3 rating is the highest for any pizza in Maryland and ranks among the top 73 of all pizzas reviewed by Portnoy.
