SUN: Hearing scheduled in Baltimore jail overdetention lawsuit

BALTIMORE, Md. — A hearing on the issue of class certification is scheduled for Nov. 20 in a federal lawsuit in which the City of Baltimore’s Central Booking and Intake Center is accused of keeping more than 14,000 people for hours or even days after a judge ordered their release, according to an attorney for the plaintiffs.

The hearing is scheduled in federal court in Baltimore, said Cary J. Hansel, an attorney for the plaintiffs. The plaintiffs are seeking to have a judge certify the lawsuit as a class action, which allows a small group of plaintiffs to pursue claims on behalf of a large number of people who have suffered similar injuries.

The 30-page lawsuit seeks hourly compensation for each proposed class member for the time between when they were ordered released and when they were actually released…
