Westminster Hall tops poll of Maryland’s scariest graveyards

BALTIMORE, MD—Maryland is home to some of the country’s most historic—and purportedly haunted—burial grounds, and a recent national poll confirms that the state’s eerie cemeteries hold a prominent place in the American consciousness, especially as Halloween approaches.

A survey of 3,004 Americans conducted by Choice Mutual, a life insurance agency, asked respondents to name the graveyard they would be least prepared to visit alone at night. Three Maryland cemeteries made the list, with Baltimore’s Westminster Hall & Burying Ground taking the top spot in the state.

Westminster, the final resting place of master of the macabre, Edgar Allan Poe, is renowned for its gothic atmosphere and spectral legends that seem to mirror the author’s own dark tales.
