SUN: Women awaiting trial held in restrictive housing after emergency jail transfer

MARYLAND (WBFF) — Over a week after their emergency transfer from a Baltimore jail, women awaiting trial at the Maryland Correctional Institution for Women remained held in restrictive housing.

“Some of these ladies are crying,” said Shernota Chase, whose daughter is in pretrial detention at MCI-W. “They’re saying, ‘Put us with general population.’”

Chase’s daughter is one of 412 people — 363 men and 49 women — who were housed at the Maryland Reception, Diagnostic and Classification Center (MRDCC) when a third-party inspection led the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services to determine the facility unsafe for staff and inmates…
