You wouldn’t know it from daily news across the nation, state and city, but many schools are beating the odds and achieving outstanding results. They are all a gift to our schoolchildren.
It’s not easy to single one out, but I am particularly in touch with the Hampstead Hill Academy, a neighborhood K-8 school up the street from where I lived in the Canton area of Baltimore City. It’s a shiny holiday ornament: Proof that a school predominantly serving students from low-income backgrounds and students of color can succeed at high rates.
