Maryland farmer Chris Weaver set a world record last year with 154.98 bushels per acre for nonirrigated, no-till soybeans — a feat verified by the Maryland Soybean Association. But for Weaver, this is just a step toward his ultimate goal: 200 bushels per acre.
Weaver’s passion for farming is fueled by his love of challenges. Inspired by David Hula’s 500-bushel corn yields, he decided to push the boundaries of soybean production.
“I figured, you know what, let’s start playing with beans,” he said. “We started looking at something that was off the cuff, just something different for no-till, nonirrigated beans. And a lot of the guys were stuck in the rut of 50 bushels. So, I set this unrealistic goal at the time that I thought of — 200-bushel, nonirrigated beans.”…
