NEW YORK (WBFF) — Luigi Mangione, a Towson native accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in December of 2024, experienced a setback in court Friday as a New York state judge ruled that his state murder trial will proceed before his federal trial.
The state trial is scheduled for June 8, while the federal trial is set for September. Mangione’s legal team accused state prosecutors of pushing to go first, before the feds to avoid New York case law against double jeopardy — the state’s restriction on trying someone twice for the same crime.
The contentious Feb. 6 hearing ended with an outburst from Mangione — as he was being escorted out of the courtroom in a jail uniform and handcuffs — frustrated over the double jeopardy issue, yelling, “It’s the same trial twice. One plus one equals two. Double jeopardy by any common sense definition.”…
