Pre-Dawn West Baltimore Killing Leads to Murder Charge for 40-Year-Old Neighbor

A 40-year-old Baltimore man is now facing murder charges in the shooting death of a West Baltimore resident that occurred on Jan. 18. Police arrested Derrick Ashe Jr. on Feb. 12 in connection with the early-morning incident that left a 36-year-old man dead, a key step in an investigation that began along West North Avenue in mid-January.

According to Baltimore Witness, officers took Ashe into custody on the 1900 block of Division Street and transported him to the Central Booking & Intake Facility. That report states that Ashe, 40, was charged with first- and second-degree murder, assault and multiple handgun violations, all tied to the Jan. 18 West Baltimore shooting.

What Police Reported About the Jan. 18 Shooting

As outlined by the Baltimore Police Department, officers were flagged down near Linden Avenue and West North Avenue at about 4:48 a.m. on Jan. 18 and found an adult male suffering from an apparent life-threatening gunshot wound. The victim was transported to a hospital and later died, the advisory says. A January tracker published by WMAR-2 News lists the victim as 36-year-old Jemel Dixon.

Charges and the Legal Stakes

Prosecutors have filed first- and second-degree murder counts along with assault and weapons offenses, according to the charging report.
