Winter Storm Warning Issued for Maryland: Heavy snow and hazardous travel expected

BALTIMORE, MD—The National Weather Service in Baltimore MD/Washington DC has issued a Winter Storm Warning for a large portion of Maryland, effective from 3 p.m. Sunday to 10 a.m. EST Monday.

Forecasters are warning of an impactful coastal system that is expected to bring heavy snow and gusty winds to central, north central, northeast, northern, and southern parts of the state.

Key Forecast Details

  • Snow Accumulations: Widespread totals of 4 to 8 inches are expected. However, areas in northeast Maryland could see locally higher amounts reaching up to 12 inches.
  • Wind: Northwest winds could gust as high as 35 mph, potentially leading to blowing snow and reduced visibility.
  • Timing: The most intense conditions are slated for Sunday night through the Monday morning commute.

Impact on Travel and Commute

The National Weather Service warns that travel could become very difficult. Roads, particularly bridges and overpasses which freeze faster than surface roads, are expected to become slick and hazardous.

“The hazardous conditions could impact the Monday morning commute,” the NWS stated in the alert, urging residents to prepare for significant disruptions.

The warning covers a wide swath of the state, including:

  • Central Maryland: Northwest, Central, and Southeast Howard County; Anne Arundel County.
  • Northern Maryland: Carroll, Northern and Southern Baltimore, and Cecil Counties.
  • Southern Maryland: St. Mary’s and Calvert Counties.
  • Northeast Maryland: Northwest and Southeast Harford Counties.
