East Coast winter storm set to hit hard: How to understand the warnings and advisories

WASHINGTON (7News) — Winter alerts can sound interchangeable, but they’re not. And with a strong coastal storm set to affect parts of the DMV and a larger chunk of the East Coast Sunday into Monday, it’s a good time to translate the terminology into plain English.

Blizzard Warning

This is the most intense snow alert. It is issued when blizzard conditions are expected within 12 to 18 hours. That means snow or blowing snow will reduce visibility to a quarter mile or less for at least three hours, and winds will be sustained at 35 mph or higher or frequently gust to 35 mph or more……
