Seeing young children wandering alone outdoors can be scary and often means something isn’t quite right. Toddlers don’t frequently take off on their own, particularly not in the middle of the night, but a pair of Maryland children apparently did just that on May 6, 2026. Baltimore police found a boy and a girl, both nonverbal, in the middle of the night and desperately needed help identifying them. Luckily for them, the police found a parent that same day, but the story has many people wondering how this happened.
The children were found together.
According to People, the Baltimore Police Department reported finding the children in the 3400 block of Lyndale Avenue around 3 a.m. May 6. The boy appeared to be between 3 and 4 years old. The little girl looked about 2. Emergency responders took the children to a hospital for evaluation. Police shared photos in a since-deleted social media post asking for help identifying the children.
Police located a responsible person not long after finding the children.
A spokesperson reportedly told Instagram user Eric Johnson, who posts as @ericjaystreetnews, that police found a parent around 5:30 a.m. the same day. Police did not state whether any charges had been or would be filed but confirmed the situation “continues to be an open and active investigation.”
The story has left many people asking questions.
Commenters on Johnson’s post want to know how the children got outside alone and what the parents’ excuse is.
“They look well taken care of, but watch they gonna ask about those knots on his forehead,” one commenter suggested.
