Baton Rouge resident Gary Chambers readily admits he was a reluctant civil activist and did not even know he had taken on that role until a local newspaper tagged him with that moniker.
Chambers, who was the keynote speaker at the Tangipahoa Parish NAACP Awards banquet on June 19, recalled how in 2015 Baton Rouge resident Lamar Johnson was pulled over on a traffic stop. Shortly after, an East Baton Rouge Police officer who initiated the stop, learned of a bench warrant for Johnson’s arrest in New Orleans.
And little did Chambers know that an event unfolding at that moment would take his life in a new direction and with a different purpose…
