State proposal would shift homeless housing assistance funds to open 200-bed shelter in Baton Rouge

Thousands of formerly homeless people in the greater New Orleans area rely on federal dollars to help pay for their housing. But homeless advocates and service providers worry that that money — currently administered by a local coalition that provides support to people experiencing homelessness — could be in jeopardy.

Under a plan proposed by the Louisiana Housing Corp., tens of millions of federal homeless services dollars — much of which is currently used for permanent supportive housing and rapid re-housing for thousands of people — would soon go to pay for a 200-bed shelter in Baton Rouge.

Jesse Rabinowitz, the spokesperson for the National Homelessness Law Center, called the proposal “deeply concerning.”…
