I haven’t had time to cook lately, and I was aching for some home-style cooking. Dorothy’s Soul Food Kitchen had the fixings.

I ordered the baked chicken and had the choice of three sides, so I chose the mac and cheese, cabbage and red beans and rice. After about 10 minutes, the plate came hot with a piece of cornbread. Just off looks, it was the kind of spread that told me I ordered right. The taste confirmed that — the cabbage had a little kick, and the mac and cheese brought the comfort I was looking for.

I scarfed down the chicken and red beans, and an employee joked that I should slow down eating. It felt like I was in my mom’s kitchen. I loved it!…
