BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – John Reynolds had no idea what he was getting into when his dad told him there was a cannon for sale at Kenny Gill’s Music Shop over forty years ago. John and his friend Ronnie Paxton drove to Government Street across from Baton Rouge High and purchased a small cannon and brought it back to St. Amant.
That little noisemaker has stayed in Ascension Parish ever since. John and Ronnie got into some trouble the night they bought it and test fired it. The police weren’t exactly keen to the idea of recreational booming. However, John had an idea to go to the St. Amant High School Football games and fire it there.
Since then, the St. Amant Cannon Crew has been formed and for more than four decades “kabooms” have rung through the parish after every Gator scoring play at “The Pit.”…
