The Tigers have had some heart-breaking losses this season. But on Saturday in Columbia, South Carolina, they got over the hump and took down the 11th ranked Gamecocks 64-63.
It didn’t look good early in the 2nd half as LSU was down 41-25 with just under 17 minutes left to play, but the Tigers stayed the course and played with togetherness and toughness down the stretch.
After missing a lot of shots in the first half at the rim, they started to go down in the second half. And LSU hit some three-pointers, 4-of-7 in the second half.
Sophomore Tyrell Ward hit three of them, including two in the final 3:30 of the game. Ward, who missed a lot of the first half, because of foul trouble had a career-high 16 points. That’s three straight games in double figures for the former five-star prospect.
Jordan Wright also had a strong finish. He had a chance to tie the game at the buzzer on Tuesday in Florida but missed the shot. On Saturday, he scored the final seven points to finish with 14 points. Wright made two free throws with five seconds left to give the Tigers a one-point lead.
