BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — 2024 will go down in Baton Rouge weather history as the second hottest year ever on record. The Baton Rouge climatological records go back over 130 years.

Several factors caused the record warmth. The main one was a record-low overnight temperature. In 2024, there were 36 days with record warm overnight lows and 21 days with record afternoon highs.

Data shows 2024 only saw one day each of a new record low and record low maximum temperature. May, June, and November set new records as the warmest ever. July and August were the second warmest on record.

2024 set another record for the most days of 80 degrees or warmer, with a total of 237 days. This beat 2023’s record of 235. Baton Rouge also set a record for the latest-ever 90-degree high on Nov. 6.

2024 was a roller coaster for precipitation. One month was above normal, then the next was below. This continued all year until the last two months were both above normal. As a result, the year ended up almost four inches above normal in precipitation.
