Local nonprofits, federal grants fix up homes for seniors

Patricia Hebert likes her independence: She cuts her own grass on a riding mower and even whacks weeds using her roller as a prop.

But until recently, her beloved home, which she and her husband John moved into in 1998, was working against her. A ramp first installed in 2011, when her husband fell and broke his leg, fell into disrepair after his death in 2019, making it difficult for her to access her car and lawn mower.

That was until Rebuild Together Acadiana sent five volunteers from Georgia to build her new ramp this February…
