Man sentenced in 2022 killing of Southern University student

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – A man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison, with 10 suspended at hard labor, for the shooting death of a Southern University student.

De’Arius Ellis, 19, was initially indicted on a manslaughter and armed robbery charge, but was convicted of a criminal conspiracy to commit manslaughter as part of a plea deal. The plea reduced the maximum amount of time that Ellis could serve in prison.
