Downtown Lafayette floods, water enters businesses as Festival International kicks off

Thunderstorms and heavy rain flooded downtown Lafayette early Thursday morning, hours before thousands of people, food and arts vendors and musicians are expected to fill the streets for the second day of Festival International de Louisiane.

Lafayette, Broussard and Youngsville remain under a flash flood warning until 9:30 a.m., according to the National Weather Service. As much as 5 inches of rain has fallen in parts of the city, according to the weather team at KLFY-TV, with some rescues being reported.

State Climatologist Jay Grymes said there were some spots in the Lafayette area with unofficial reports of more than six inches of rainfall, which could be 25-to-nearly-50 year records…
