Stinging caterpillars have returned | What you should know about the prickly insects

BATON ROUGE — It’s spring, and while that means warmer days filled with sun and spring showers, flowers, and boiled crawfish, it also means the return of what many dub the “stinging caterpillars.”

Aaron Ashbrook, assistant professor of urban and peri-urban extension entomology at LSU, explained that there are four common “stinging caterpillar” types in Louisiana, with the buck moth caterpillar being most notable.

“Around this time of the year, we start to encounter several different stinging caterpillars around the state. Now, the primary one that people are talking about is the buckmoth caterpillar,” Ashbrook said…
