‘She’s a fighter’: Son shares his mother’s battle as Louisiana’s first West Nile case of 2025

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – The West Nile virus continues to affect people across Louisiana, and this year’s first confirmed human case hits close to home.

The Louisiana Department of Health confirmed an 84-year-old Denham Springs woman is the first human case of West Nile in 2025. Fay DuPont has spent the past two weeks in both a hospital and a rehabilitation center recovering from the virus, which has taken a serious toll on her health.

Her son, Joey DuPont, said it all began with what seemed like mild symptoms, which included a low-grade fever and dizziness. Doctors initially believed Fay had meningitis. But after further testing, they discovered it was West Nile…
