When Waste Management’s new state-of-the art landfill in Walker opened in November of 1987 it was touted to be more advanced in terms of construction. But the Jeff Davis Sanitary Landfill being built in Welsh at the time was thought to be “significantly better” in terms of natural geology.

Woodside Sanitary Landfill General Manager David Mason told the Lake Charles American Press for its Feb. 7, 1988, edition that the Woodside site was monitored by nine groundwater wells, as opposed to the eight being installed at the Jeff Davis facility. Located outside of the disposal area, the wells were equipped with a pump system and their water sampled at regular intervals to insure no contaminants had migrated from the landfall.

The samples were then tested by an independent testing laboratory and results reported to the Department of Environmental Quality every six months…
