Faimon Roberts: Ice cream, tapas, religion: church services sink liquor license

In what must have seemed like a scene from the sitcom Parks and Recreation a Louisiana city council last month denied an alcohol permit renewal to a local creamery because it’s also a church.

You read that right. Tim and Tasha Levert, the pastors of Mustard Seed Church in Denham Springs, also own and operate a creamery in the suburb’s downtown area. Their creamery is called, you guessed it, Mustard Seed Creamery, and it also serves tapas. (I know — lots of questions here, but let’s keep to the main issue.)

Last year, the Leverts applied for and received an alcohol permit from the City of Denham Springs for their creamery. But they were informed this year that their permit would not be renewed because the Leverts’ church had begun meeting weekly in their business. A city ordinance prohibits alcohol sales within 300 feet of a church…
