Baton Rouge mayor’s office, schools halt play about gun violence at Manship Theater

The Baton Rouge mayor’s office and the East Baton Rouge school system cancelled plans for a school play at the Manship Theatre last week after learning the performance included content they deemed inappropriate.

A student production titled “Echoes of Enough: An Evening of Art, Truth, and Hope” was scheduled to be performed Oct. 6 at a downtown Baton Rouge theater. The play is part of a national campaign for teenage performers to use the stage to call for an end to gun violence.

The city-parish Office of Community Development had set aside money to pay for the event to be held at the theater, one of the area’s most prominent venues. City-Parish officials decided to pull that funding after they saw the script and talked with school officials…
