Baton Rouge bar owner accused of theft in Facebook Marketplace scam

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — A man is accused of giving a person a worthless check during a Facebook Marketplace sale.

The Baton Rouge Police Department (BRPD) has charged Chad Hughes, 41, with theft and issuing worthless checks. Hughes co-owns Ivar’s Sports Bar & Grill.

BRPD said that Hughes contacted the victim after they listed a trailer for sale on Facebook Marketplace. They agreed on a price of $20,000 and arranged to meet at the Courtyard Marriott on S. Acadian Thruway.

The victim told police the sale, which happened on June 8, went through without incident. The victim gave Hughes the trailer and dumpsters. Hughes gave the victim a $20,000 check, police said. The victim went to deposit the check at their bank. They were told it was returned for “insufficient funds,” according to BRPD.

Arrest documents said the victim contacted Hughes by phone, and he said he would replace the check within a few days…
